Assignment 3A – Your Entrepreneurship Story

I have always been entrepreneurial. Growing up I was always looking for odd ways to be my own boss and make money. One of my first business ventures happened when I was thirteen years old. My friend and I learned that you can trade in scrap metal for money. We did not have cars so we found an old children's bicycle holder and tied it to the back of our bicycles. We then biked around different neighborhoods and packed any metal that we found on the side of the road into our homemade bike trailer. Once we collected enough metal, we would take it all to the scrapyard and trade it in for cash money. After a few months, we made about $500 each. This was good money for two thirteen-year-old kids, but we decided to brainstorm on ways to expand our business. We decided to make fliers and hand them out to people in our neighborhood advertising our "scrap removal" business. We started to get calls from people asking us to move large objects such as old air conditioning units and home appliances. Our idea had worked, as we would have been able to make more money, but unfortunately, we were still riding on bikes and were not able to transport such large objects with our current setup. We decided to scrap our business idea about six months later. Overall, I was content with our original business plan and felt like we made the most of what we could as thirteen-year-old kids on bicycles. I hope to continue to think with an entrepreneurial mindset and create business ventures on a larger scale.

  1. First off, I must say that it was genius to collect other people’s trash and turn it into cash. It was also nice to try to expand your business but it is obvious you had not thought through how large of object could be thrown away. I think you could have given some examples of how you are still thinking in an entrepreneurial manner and what some of the new ventures are that you may have brainstormed.
